The late, great Professor Epeli Hau’ofa is considered by many as the leading authority in Pacific Studies. He was born in Papua New Guinea to Tongan missionary parents and worked for many years out of University of the South Pacific’s Fiji campus.

His essay, “Our Sea of Islands” is a seminal piece in the Pacific Studies landscape. As a Pacific anthropologist, this essay is a reflection on his approach to teaching about the Pacific Islands, and the impacts different ways of seeing the Pacific and teaching about the Pacific had on him, and his students.
