Essentially, there are some very marked and impactful differences in Western and Pasifika worldviews, but in saying that, there are also some very rich and meaningful similarities that cross over – although there always a few outliers in every culture, for the most part all cultures seek to love and respect others, act with humility and kindness and seek self-actualisation.
Incorporating these Models into Service Delivery
The purpose of providing these models is to highlight that there is a Pasifika evidence-base that can be accessed, utilised and embedded into your engagement strategy. Doing so will go a long way to ensuring your engagement is person-centred!
What these models also provide, is an insight into what is critical for successful engagement with Pasifika peoples and communities. When designing strategies and policies that target Pasifika peoples, the dimensions outlined in the above models must be considered and factored in. This will ensure you are working in a culturally responsive manner and account for the perspectives, worldviews and needs of your target community. More often than not, we have seen organisations design and deliver services targeting Pasifika peoples without considering their views, opinions or cultures.
